The supreme lord manifests himself in
human form from time to time for world peace. This has been observed
for some time and the seers and saints have been able to predict this
manifestation of the supreme being in human form.
In Hindusim, which is one of the
oldest religions, Lord Vishnu's dasa(10) avatars have illustrated the
Darwin's theory of Evolution. Today it has been proved by scientists
that our genes and the genes of Chimpanzees are 98.5% common and we
share 90% of our genes with most of the mammals. This has only been
proved more in Hinduism as illustrated below.
Maha Vishnu in the early times was incarnated as a
Mastya Avathar - Lord Vishnu in the form of a Fish. Lord
Vishnu, from the AUM does the protection job. For protecting the sages,
people and the king in the brink of extinction from natural calamities
and disasters Lord Vishnu incarnated as a fish and steered them clear
to safety to the next yuga/era.
Yoga Concept - The Kundalini force is like a fish swimming in a
sea. When this kundalini force rises to the Sahasrara(the highest
chakra), the longitivity increases and he attains mukthi/liberation
through his yogic powers. He will even be able to sustain natural
calamities and disasters. The message from this avatar is "We should
swim in the ocean of desire using the fish called Yoga and reach
Kurma - Lord Vishnu in
the form of a Tortoise. It lives in land and water. It is a reptile
that reproduces via eggs. This signifies a very deep yoga concept.
In KURMA Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as a tortoise. It is an
interesting story involving both the gods (Devtas) and asuras (demons).
In the ongoing saga of battle between the gods and asuras, on one
occasion the gods suddenly lost all their strength due to a curse by
the short-tempered sage Durvasa.Vishnu then asked them to churn the
ocean of milk after adding medicines into the ocean. Mt Mandara could
be used a the churning stick he said. He requested them to ask the help
of Asuras in lifting the mountain in exchange for offer of the share of
nectar of immortality that would ensue from the churning. Both the
devatas and the asuras churned the ocean using the serpent Vasuki as
the rope. But as churning was proceeding the mountain was sinking and
then Lord Vishnu took the form of the tortoise KURMA and kept the
mountain afloat. As the churning continued first lots of demons
appeared, then kamadhenu, then the nectar of immortality.
Yoga Concept - A yogi should learn from the tortoise. To protect
itself it hides its 4 limbs and head inside the shell. Likewise a yogi
should not surrender to his 5 senses and protect himself through
manthra japa to churn from the ocean of desire. As a consequence of his
penance, first he will release many bad qualities(synonym to poision).
Later on he attains all the 8 siddhis. After that he will be able to
drink the nectar of immortality from the Sahasrara.
Varaha - Lord Vishnu in the form of a Pig. A demon
Hiranyaksha, had prayed for Lord Shiva and got awarded a boon that no
beast nor man nor god could kill him. But somehow from the list of
beasts the name of boar was missing. This proved to be his lacunae. He
then started a campaign of plunder across the worlds. He pushed the
world to the Pataal loka, or the under of the sea. He stole the Vedas,
the holy scriptures from the Lord Brahma. To retrieve the Vedas and to
save the world the Lord Vishnu assumed the role of a boar and brought
out the earth from the under of the ocean, using its two tusks. It then
killed Hiranyaksha and retrieved the Vedas from the asura and brought
it back to the safe custody of the Lord Brahma.
Yoga Concept - A man is composed of both Deva Guna and Asura
Guna. To get rid of the asura gunas he should fill himself with deva
gunas. Even though Hiranyaksha was a great Shiva devotee, and conquerer
of all the worlds he let his ego get to his head and was involved in
lot of misdeeds . As a consequence he was destroyed by this Varaha
avatar. This avatar emphasises that one should be courageous but not
cocky and lead thier lives virtuously.
Narashima - Lord Vishnu in the form of a
semi-man,semi-lion. IThe king of demons(asuras), Hiranyakasyapa, wanted
to become immortal and wanted to remain young forever. To this end, he
meditated for Lord Brahma and because of his severe penance, the gods
were frightened and asked Brahma to pacify the king. Brahma was
impressed by his austerity and granted him a wish. HiranyaKasyapa
wished that he be neither killed by a man or beast, nor in daylight or
at night and neither inside or outside a building. Having obtained the
wish he considered himself the supreme God and frobade all worship of
gods by anyone. But his son Prahlada, was an ardent devotee of Vishnu.
This enraged Hiranyakasyapa very much. He ordered numerous ways to kill
Prahlada including asking his sister Holika to sit with Prahlada in the
fire. But everytime Prahlada escaped unhurt. Enraged, once he asked
Prahlad to show him the Lord Vishnu. Prahlad said, "He is everywhere".
Further enraged, Hiranyakasyapa knocked down a pillar, and asked if
Lord was present there. Lord Vishnu then emerged as a half lion, half
man from the pillar which was neither inside the house nor outside, and
the time was evening, neither night nor day. He then killed
Hiranyakasyapa thus saving the life of his devotee Prahlada.
Yoga Concept - This avatar incarnated to signify the omnipresent
and omnipotent nature of the Supreme Being and protect his followers at
any cost at the right time. For a devotee who is constantly lamenting
about Lord Vishnu, even when faced with lot of difficulty will be
protected. We should always remember that we should be humble. However
powerful we may be, we are meek before God. Those who embrace the feet
of God can never be defeated.
Vamana - VAMANA Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as
a dwarf priest in this world. BALI, the grandson of Prahlada was a very
valorous and mighty asura. By his penance and might, he conquered the
whole world. Indra and other gods fearing that he and asuras would
conquer all the three worlds, went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu
was then born as a dwarf Vamana in the household of a brahmana(priest).
He went to Bali on growing up and asked for alms. Bali was delighted to
offer him anything he requested even though his priest warned him that
it was Lord Vishnu.
Vamana then requested for the amount of land that could come
under his three feet. Bali gracefully agreed. Lord Vishnu then grew in
size and covered the earth and heaven in two stride. And due to lack of
space, he put his third leg on Bali himself and crushed Bali to the
nether or the Patala loka(underground world), thus helping the Gods
A dwarf. This form was taken to destroy the egos and unnecessary evil
in humans and to show the path of the righteous? This incarnation later
manifested itself to show the truly universal nature of god by
occupying all the 3 worlds.
Yoga Concept - However big a person is, if one deviates from
righteousness and acts egoistic he is bound to be doomed. This avatar
implicitly mentions that “God’d Feet is present in all Human Beings
heads”. What this means is that God is present in all beings and that
we are all connected to the Lord. If we meditate in the Sahasrara
Chakra(found in the crown point at the very top of the head - an
essential element in obtaining supramental higher consciousness of the
truth that one is all and all is one) we can break the shackles of
Karma and attain liberation. It was based on this that the practice of
Namam and Vibuthi came to effect.
Parasuramar - In PARASURAMA Avatar, Lord Vishnu
incarnates himself as a brahmana(priest) in this world. He was brought
in this world to avenge all kshatriyas who had become arrogant and were
suppressing the brahmans in the world. He was born to Jamadagni and
Renuka, and belonged to the Brighu clan. Parashurama was always
carrying an axe presented to him by Lord Shiva of whom he was an ardent
devotee. Kartavirya a powerful king, once went to Jamadagni's home when
he was out, and after a meal, stole the Kamadhenu cow, which was
supposed to give endless quantity of milk. Jamadgni was enraged and he
went and killed the king and brought Kamadhenu back. On hearing this
the son of the king came back and killed Jamdagni. Parasurama was
enraged at this and went and avenged the death of his father by killing
all kshatriyas over 21 generations. This avatar was an example of
devotion to parents and proved that nothing is more important than a
pledge from the dad. This avatar also proved that man at one time was
living a life of a jungle man and used to carry an axe in his hand.
Yoga Concept - When one reaches a certain stage in Yoga they
attain certain occult powers (supernatural powers) one being Kamadhenu.
This is represented as a cow with a head of a women. This is the
transformation of kundalini power. For people who practice yoga and
indulge in penance, kamadhenu- i.e. one of the occult powers will be
realised. This story also emphasizes that if a great sage is killed,
the assassin’s entire race will be destroyed. This avatar was an
extraordinary example of devotion to parents.
Rama avatarIn RAMA Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself
as RAMA , the central character in the epic RAMAYANA. In this biggest
epic of Indian mythology a myriad of topics are covered, including war,
love, brotherhood, ideal man , son etc. It is essentially the story of
an ideal king, son, father and man, RAMA. As an ideal son, he agrees to
abide by wishes of his father King Dasaratha to spend 14 years in
forest, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman. During the
course of his stay in forest, the demon Ravana abducts his wife Sita.
Ram then sets out in search of his wife. During this he makes friends
with king of monkeys Sugreeva, and his devotee Hanuman. In the end he
wages a war with Ravana and rescues Sita to return to Ayodhya and rule
it as an ideal king for 1000 s of years.
Yoga Concept - Even though Lord rama was the son of a great
emperor, he possessed the highest of virtues. It is said that Sita was
discovered in a furrow in a ploughed field by King Janaka. She
represents jeevathma symbolically since jeevathmas live on Land. The
process of Sita the Jeevathma attaining Rama the Paramathma is called
Mukthi/Liberation. Further more this signifies sanadhana dharma. This
is the deepest concept in Yoga.
It is also intresting to see Darvin's evolution theory in action in
Ramayana, i.e. man evolving from monkeys. This was evident from
Hanuman, Vali & Sugreevan who were closely associated with Rama avatar. This is a very significant example of how man evolved from monkeys.
Balaramar - Balarama, the Hindu equivalent of Bacchus in Greek and Roman mythology, is the brother of Krishna.
Yoga Concept - Balarama is considered to be an incarnation of
Adiseshan the 5 headed snake, which in our human body represents the 5
organs. Lord Narayana is said to be lying on this Adiseshan in Yoga
Nidra. This signifies a very deep concept. Adiseshan's five heads
represent our five organs in the body or five boothas outside of us.
Thus the five organs (pancha indreyam)which is a constant source of
distraction for a yogi, when gained control over becomes a positive
force. The lord is said to be lying over adiseshan and implies that the
lord controls the pancha boothas. This adiseshan is said to be
supportive to Lord Vishnu which implies that the pancha boothas and the
pancha indreyams will always aid a Yogi.
Lord Krishna- In KRISHNA Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates
himself as KRISHNA , the central character in the epic MAHABHARATA. In
this biggest epic of Indian mythology a myriad of topics are covered,
including war, love, brotherhood, politics etc. It is essentially the
story of two warring groups of cousin brothers, the PANDAVAs and the
KAURAVAs. As a part of the Mahabahrata, during the war KRISHNA, gives a
long discourse to his disciple ARJUNA, collectively termed as
Unlike Ramayana, Mahabharata deals with more down to earth issues like
politics, human nature, human weaknesses, and does not attempt to
idealise the characters as in RAMAYANA.
Yoga Concept -
By creating the most significant Hindu Bible, Lord Krishna gave the world the Gita which
is considered by many to be by far the most superior yoga texts ever.
This also proved that during this era man was at the peak of spiritual
Krishna Avatar is full of Yogic concepts. Lord Krishna deals with Karma
Kogam(Yoga of Action), Gyana yoga(The yoga of Knowledge), Bakthi
Yoga(Yoga of Devotion) in the Gita. The important point to realize is
that one should practice Karma Yoga, Gyana yoga and Bakthi yoga. All of
these are steps to attain moksha.
Kalki avatar -In Hindu traditions, Kalki is the tenth and
final Maha Avatara (great incarnation) of Vishnu the Preserver, who
will come to end the Kali Yuga, (The Age of Darkness and Destruction).
The name Kalki is often a metaphor for "Eternity" or "Time". The
origins of the name probably lie in the word Kalka which refers to
"dirt", "filth" or "foulness" and hence denotes the "Destroyer of
Foulness", "Destroyer of Confusion", "Destroyer of Darkness", or "The
Annihilator of Ignorance".
Yoga Concept - All jeevathmas are born based on the “Laws of
Karma”. This avatar will explain how to break the shackles of karmic
bondage and attain Mukthi/liberation. He will be a Guru who will
practice and preaches Karma yoga, Gnayana yoga and Bakthi yoga and
Annihilates Ignorance. Thus destroying injustice and restore Sanathana
dharma Mahaguru Parthasarathy has re-incarnated as Kalki Avatar.
Sana - Paramathma/God/Sreeman Narayanan.
Dhanam - Lakshmi/wealth(The representative of the Jeevathma/humans).
Lakshmi is commonly understood as wealth. But the deeper meaning of
this is the Athma. Lakshmi is always found to be united with Lord
The union of Jeevathma with the paramathma is the true meaning of
sanathana dharma. And by this union freedom/liberation is achieved. The
union of Shreeman Narayanan with Maha Lakshmi is the fundamental goal
and is the purpose of human life. The path how Mahalakshmi achieved
Janarthanam is Sanathana Dharmam.
